TRX250EX Sportrax (2001-2005): The Original Generation, Built Around Direct Shaft Drive and a Genuinely Broad Powerband

Honda's own 2005 product materials describe this original generation's core mission directly: "featuring a broad powerband, dependable performance and light weight, the Honda Sportrax 250EX serves as a sporty, fun-to-ride ATV for recreational riders." This 2001-2005 span represents the genuine debut generation of the TRX250EX — the platform later reworked with Honda's SportClutch innovation starting in 2006, but here running its original, straightforward manual clutch setup.

Power comes from a 229cc air-cooled OHV single-cylinder engine, longitudinally mounted specifically to allow direct drive-shaft alignment to the rear wheels — Honda's own product copy calls this out as delivering "more efficient power transfer" than a chain-drive layout would allow. The two-valve cylinder head runs performance-optimized valve timing with a 31.5mm intake valve and 27mm exhaust valve, specifically engineered for a broad, usable powerband rather than a peaky top-end rush. A 22mm carburetor with genuinely light throttle effort delivers immediate engine response, and Honda's own materials highlight a thoughtful detail: "a unique buffer plate in the carburetor float chamber helps maintain consistent fuel flow when riding across varied terrain" — a real practical touch for a machine built to handle uneven trails without fuel starvation under hard acceleration or off-camber riding.

Solid-state CD ignition with electronic advance and an 8,750 rpm rev limiter protected the engine from over-revving, while a closed crankcase vent system safeguarded against oil contamination — genuinely conscientious engineering for a machine aimed partly at newer riders who might not always follow perfect maintenance practices. The engine met California Air Resources Board (CARB) off-road emissions standards, a genuine environmental consideration built into the original design rather than retrofitted later. Standard equipment included a large, lightweight 2.7-gallon plastic fuel tank, a snorkel-type air intake for cool, clean air delivery in varied riding conditions, a single-headlight system with a twin-filament 35W/35W high/low bulb, a maintenance-free battery, a reusable washable foam air filter, neutral and reverse indicator lights, and an easy-to-use parking brake. Curb weight came in at a genuinely light 349 lbs, and 2005 brought Team Honda-inspired graphics as the final styling update before the 2006 redesign introduced the SportClutch system and TRX450R-inspired bodywork.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001-2005 TRX250EX Sportrax running the way it was built to.
