TRX200 FourTrax (1984-1985): Honda's Genuine First Four-Wheeler
MASSFX's own retrospective places this bike at a genuine turning point in Honda's history: "the year is 1984... Honda released their first four-wheeled ATV, the TRX200. Until 1984, Honda had only produced three-wheeled ATVs, so this was a game changer." ATVriders' own Honda history timeline confirms the working-vehicle mission behind the design from day one: "Honda's first four-wheel ATV, TRX 200, is powered by a durable, single-cylinder four-stroke engine running through a five-speed dual-range transmission with shaft drive and Reverse. Front and rear racks make it an indispensable tool for thousands of jobs."
Power comes from a 198cc air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, delivering output through a genuinely sophisticated 5-speed dual-range transmission with reverse — dual-range gearing that let the TRX200 handle both low-speed heavy-hauling work and higher-speed trail or field travel from the same fundamental drivetrain. Power reaches the wheels via genuine shaft final drive, a real durability advantage over chain-drive designs, delivering the kind of low-maintenance reliability that let owners run the machine hard across genuinely demanding terrain without constant chain adjustment or lubrication.
MASSFX's own long-term owner account offers genuine real-world testimony to this platform's durability: writing decades later, that owner still owned their original 1984 TRX200, having taken it "from the Ozarks to the Rocky Mountains" with only minor performance fatigue noted at high altitude above 12,000 feet — genuinely strong endurance for a nearly-40-year-old machine. Standard equipment included both front and rear cargo racks and genuine towing capability, positioning the TRX200 explicitly as a working farm and ranch tool rather than a purely recreational quad — MASSFX's own account notes the bike was "the first ATV that showed people it could be used for more than just a recreational vehicle," genuinely capable of hauling feed to cattle one afternoon and handling trail riding with friends the next day. This original TRX200 platform directly preceded the sportier, chain-driven TRX200SX introduced the following year in spring 1985, which shared the model number but ran genuinely different chassis and drivetrain architecture built for a more performance-oriented rider.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1984-1985 TRX200 FourTrax running the way it was built to.
