NC700S (2011-2013): Honda’s “New Concept - Fun Naked,” with a Helmet-Sized Storage Space Where the Tank Should Be

Honda unveiled the NC700S, along with the NC700X, at EICMA 2011, built on the engine and frame of the Integra scooter. Honda’s own theme for it was “New Concept - Fun Naked”. The big idea is that the fuel tank sits under the seat. That leaves a lockable storage compartment in front of the rider, large enough for a full-face helmet. One test confirmed it stayed dry in a heavy downpour. Reviewers called it the return of the street-standard. It has a low-slung seat and a low-cost maintenance design, and it’s aimed at urban commuters and new riders.

Power comes from a 670cc liquid-cooled SOHC parallel-twin, slanted forward 62 degrees to free up the storage space. It’s designed to be compact with a low center of gravity and a broad torque curve. It makes about 47 hp at 6,250 rpm in S form (the NC700X is rated at 51 hp) and about 44 lb-ft (60 Nm) of torque. The gearbox is a conventional 6-speed manual, or Honda’s second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission, which can shift automatically in Drive and Sport maps or by handlebar buttons. In the US, ABS was only offered with the DCT, which added about $2,000. Elsewhere, including Canada, ABS was standard.

The chassis is a steel frame with a 41mm telescopic fork and a Pro-Link monoshock, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Brakes are a single 320mm front disc with a two-piston caliper and a single 240mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper. Combined ABS adds an extra piston to the front caliper and lets the rear pedal apply some front pressure.

Confirmed figures list a 790mm (31.1-inch) seat height and a weight of about 474 lbs for the manual bike, with the DCT and ABS adding roughly 33 lbs. The tank holds 3.7 gallons, for a theoretical range of about 288 miles.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2012-2013 Honda NC700S running the way it was built to.
