VFR800Fi RC46 (1998-2001): "The Last of the Pure VFRs" — Before VTEC Divided Opinion

Bennetts' own retrospective doesn't mince words about where this generation sits in VFR history: after Honda's controversial 2002 VTEC update, "the VFR800Fi also started to be viewed as the last of the 'pure' VFRs and certainly less technologically awkward than the V-TEC bike." Rider Magazine's own long-term retrospective calls it simply "a Very Fine Ride," with one owner keeping his as his only motorcycle since 2003 — genuine longevity that speaks to how right Honda got this fifth generation.

Power comes from a 781.7cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V4, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, straight-cut gear-driven camshafts, and an 11.6:1 compression ratio via a 72mm bore and 48mm stroke — genuinely enlarged and mildly destroked from the outgoing VFR750F's 748cc, 70mm x 48.6mm configuration. Rider Magazine's own dyno figures put output at 95 rear-wheel horsepower at 10,000 rpm with roughly 54 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm, delivered through PGM-FI electronic fuel injection adapted from the exotic RC45 homologation racer's system — a genuine trickle-down of race-derived engineering into an everyday sport-tourer. Bennetts' review notes the gear-driven cam whine remains one of the model's signature, beloved traits — a distinctive mechanical sound that later chain-driven VTEC generations simply couldn't replicate.

2000 brought genuine mid-cycle refinement: a catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, and an EFI system that entered closed-loop mode specifically under highway cruising operation, paired with a temperature-actuated fast-idle system that eliminated the need for a choke lever entirely. Rustproof metal mirror stalks replaced the earlier rubberized units, and European-market bikes gained Honda's HISS immobilizer system to combat theft. The chassis uses the engine as a stressed member in a frame derived from the VTR1000 Firestorm, retaining the trademark VFR single-sided swingarm, with dual side-mounted radiators (versus the VFR750's single front-mounted unit) contributing to a genuine 9kg weight increase over the outgoing 750. Standard equipment included Honda's Dual Combined Braking System (linked brakes). 1998 launch pricing came in at $9,500, positioned deliberately between Honda's VTR1000 twin ($9,000) and CBR900RR inline-four ($10,000) — and that price held steady through the model's entire four-year run before the VTEC-equipped sixth generation arrived in 2002 at $10,000.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1998-2001 VFR800Fi RC46 running the way it was built to.
