Visordown's own retrospective doesn't dance around why the VFR750F exists: Honda's earlier VF750 was "dogged with reliability problems" in the mid-1980s, so the company built a replacement engineered so thoroughly it "need never suffer the terrible taunting its predecessor had." That over-engineering worked — VFRs are still regarded among the most dependable motorcycles ever built, and Bennetts' buying guide calls the final RC36-2 generation, for many enthusiasts, "the finest all-rounder ever built."

The RC36 generation split into two genuinely distinct sub-generations across this span. The original 1990-1993 FL-FP models pushed the platform further into sport-touring territory with a plusher ride and improved weather protection, running the 748cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V4 with gear-driven cams — a Honda signature that produces the model's characteristic mechanical whistle, chosen specifically for reliability over the chain-driven cams other manufacturers favored. Output settled around 105 hp with roughly 74 Nm of torque on unrestricted markets, delivered through a full sports fairing and aluminum twin-spar frame with anti-dive front forks.

1994 brought the genuinely significant second RC36-2 generation, with Honda claiming some 300 individual changes: an all-new, lighter aluminum beam chassis, a single-sided Pro-Arm rear swingarm allowing quick rear-wheel removal without disturbing the chain or spindle, NR750-inspired bodywork, a larger 21-litre fuel tank (up from 19), and a genuine 3 bhp power bump — all while shedding 7kg to a claimed 209kg wet weight, making the final generation both more powerful and more agile than its predecessor. Bennetts' guide notes 1995-1997 saw essentially no further technical changes, just new colorways each year, meaning any bike from 1994 onward shares its core mechanical specification. Front brakes remained a genuine weak point across the entire RC36 run — braided lines and Honda OE pads are commonly recommended upgrades — while service intervals ran a manageable 4,000-mile minor service, 8,000-mile intermediate, and 16,000-mile major service schedule throughout.
