VFR800X Crossrunner (2015-2021): The V4 Crossover That Deserved Better Sales
Bennetts' own used-buying guide sums up the Crossrunner's whole story in one line: "a bike that should have sold very well but due to its quirky styling, was generally overlooked." Those willing to look past the looks found something genuinely charming — a V4-powered sport-adventure crossover with excellent build quality and unquestioned reliability, priced at launch around £10,299 with an equipment list that undercut rivals like the BMW F800GS by over £1,000 in standard-fit extras alone.
The 2015 update marked a genuine step forward from the original 2011 Crossrunner, borrowing the revised engine and chassis from that year's new VFR800F. Power comes from a 782cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V4, DOHC with 16 valves and Honda's VTEC variable valve timing, delivering a claimed 105-107 hp at 10,000-10,250 rpm and roughly 55 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm — a genuine bump over the original Crossrunner's output, achieved through minor exhaust, intake, and engine management revisions that also dropped peak torque 1,000 rpm lower in the rev range for more usable everyday pull. A 6-speed gearbox and O-ring chain final drive round out the drivetrain.
MCN's review found the Crossrunner's light-yet-secure handling and "soulful and engaging V4 engine" genuinely impressive even years after launch, if not quite as fast as newer rivals like the Yamaha Tracer 900. Standard equipment included handlebar-switchable 3-level traction control, ABS, heated grips, LED lighting, self-cancelling indicators, and adjustable seat height, with many examples also fitted with a 31-litre topbox and Akrapovič exhaust as factory-standard extras. A 43mm HMAS cartridge fork with adjustable preload and damping pairs with a Pro-Link rear shock offering remote preload adjustment, riding on 120/70R17 front and 180/55R17 rear tires. Wet weight sits around 533 lbs, with a 32.1-inch seat height and a diamond-type aluminum twin-spar frame shared with the standard VFR800F. Honda's own maintenance schedule calls for VTEC valve inspections every 15,000 miles — a job best left to a qualified technician given the system's complexity.
