CB600F Hornet (2003-2006): "High Sting, Low Cost" — Sharpened Twice in Four Years
MCN's own review nails what made the Hornet such an enduring used-bike favorite: "used bikes are a great way to get from A to B for little money, offering fun, value, and character. The Honda CB600F Hornet is great example." Introduced for Europe in 1998, based directly on the Japan-only CB250F (itself restricted to 250cc under Japanese licensing law), the Hornet spent this 2003-2006 span receiving two genuinely meaningful updates rather than sitting still.
Power comes from a 599cc liquid-cooled inline-four, a detuned version of the engine used in Honda's contemporary CBR600 sportbike, run through a 6-speed gearbox. MCN's own model history confirms the 2003 update brought a new exhaust silencer alongside a "marginally higher 95bhp output" and Euro2 emissions compliance — a genuine, if modest, power bump layered onto styling and fuel-capacity changes rather than a wholesale engine redesign.
Autoevolution's own breakdown details exactly what changed for 2003: a larger 17-litre fuel tank (up from 16 litres) paired with sharper overall styling, while the fully-faired CB600S variant sold alongside the naked Hornet was discontinued entirely that year, leaving the naked CB600F as the sole configuration going forward. 2005 brought the more significant chassis update within this span — Visordown's own road test from the Seville press launch details a colour-matched mini cowl and redesigned front mudguard for a sharper, more aggressive look, a genuinely modern LCD instrument cluster replacing the old analogue speedometer (adding two trip meters, a fuel gauge, a clock, and a stopwatch for timing journeys), clear indicator lenses replacing the old orange units, and a dual-textured, anti-slip pillion seat material. MCN's own history confirms the mechanically significant part of that 2005 update: 41mm upside-down cartridge forks, based directly on the contemporary 2005 CBR600RR, alongside a revised rear shock for improved comfort — a genuine handling upgrade over the conventional telescopic front end used since 1998.
Visordown's own testing found the reworked Hornet felt "better, more hi-tech" once underway, still carrying that "very familiar CBR sound... a reliable sound that has been around for years and is so distinctly 'Honda.'" This 2003-2006 generation represents the final, most refined chapter of the original Hornet platform before Honda's comprehensively overhauled 2007 model arrived with a genuinely new 101bhp engine derived from the latest CBR600RR, a larger 19-litre tank, and a Fireblade-inspired dash.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2003-2006 CB600F Hornet running the way it was built to.
