Honda GL650 Silverwing Interstate 1983-1985 Service Manual

An owner's own account, shared with Rider Magazine, captures exactly why the Interstate built such a loyal following: "I bought my new Wineberry Red Silverwing Interstate in April of 1983... after 7 years... I had put over 67,000 miles on it." The same owner later traded it for Honda's next-generation Pacific Coast 800, only to discover the older 650 "had more torque and HP than the 800." The GL650I was Honda's answer to criticism that the original GL500 Interstate felt underpowered — and by every account, it solved that problem thoroughly, just one year before politics ended its run.

Power comes from the "twisted" 80-degree pushrod V-twin shared across the CX/GL family, genuinely reworked rather than simply bored out — Cycle Guide's 1983 test noted Honda's engineers strengthened the connecting rod big ends specifically to handle the jump from 497cc to 673cc displacement and the resulting power increase, from 50 hp on the GL500 to a claimed 64 hp here. A 5-speed transmission with revised gearing and shaft final drive delivered genuinely better fuel economy than the outgoing 500 despite the added weight and power.

The Interstate trim added full touring equipment absent from the standard Silver Wing: a modular seat, trunk, and saddlebag system carried over from the 1981 GL500I, gold "HONDA," "SILVERWING," and "INTERSTATE" emblems, and genuine long-distance comfort in a package roughly 200 lbs lighter than Honda's flagship Gold Wing 1100 Interstate — a real appeal for solo touring riders who didn't need the bigger bike's bulk. Rider Magazine's own retrospective called it "a perfect ride for a solo guy or gal," with less weight and less expense than the full-size Wing. The model's cancellation had nothing to do with performance or reliability — it came down entirely to the same 45% import tariff on 700cc-plus Japanese bikes that reshaped Honda's entire CX/GL lineup that year.
