Honda chose the harder path — and the result, one retrospective later called "a practical radical," won over skeptics who'd initially dismissed the CX-based platform's unusual "goofy looking" engine and shaft drive as needless complexity.

Power comes from the 497cc liquid-cooled 80-degree V-twin shared with the CX500, upgraded here with a more reliable transistorized ignition system that freed up additional power for lights and touring accessories — a genuine refinement over the standard CX. Output holds at a claimed 50 hp at 9,000 rpm and 30 lb-ft of torque, run through a 5-speed transmission and shaft final drive. Cycle Magazine's period test praised the controls as "a delight" with a notably smooth clutch and light throttle, along with brake feel it called "superb."

The Interstate trim distinguished itself with a genuinely clever, if constraining, modular luggage system: a large frame-mounted fairing reminiscent of the Vetter Windjammer, 25-litre hard saddlebags, and a top box that physically interchanged with the passenger seat — meaning riders had to choose between carrying a passenger or nearly 30 litres of gear, not both. Cycle Guide's period review summed the concept up memorably: "as a concept, it's nothing short of brilliant... with a little more engine, the execution could be brilliant as well." That extra power arrived the following year with the 1983 GL650, effectively replacing the GL500 platform.
