Honda GL500 Silverwing 1981-1983 Service Manual

Cycle World's 1981 launch review made clear the Silver Wing was really two motorcycles wearing one name: the standard GL500 covered here, and the more heavily equipped GL500 Interstate with its full fairing and luggage. Both shared the same platform — a genuinely revised chassis built specifically for touring use, rather than simply grafting accessories onto the existing CX500 the engine was borrowed from — but the standard model kept things simpler, without the Interstate's fairing, saddlebags, or interchangeable top box.

Power comes from the 497cc liquid-cooled 80-degree V-twin shared across the CX/GL family, upgraded with a more reliable transistorized ignition system versus the standard CX500, delivering a claimed 50 hp at 9,000 rpm and 30 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm through a 5-speed transmission and shaft final drive. A 10.0:1 compression ratio and dual 34mm Keihin carburetors round out the induction side.

Styling showed a genuine cleanup over the original CX platform: a radiator shroud borrowed from the CX Deluxe, a more conventional gas tank shape with slightly larger 4.6-gallon capacity, and wide, long handlebars reviewers noted felt like they'd come straight off a Gold Wing. Front suspension used air-adjustable telescopic forks, paired with a swingarm compound linkage to a single rear shock and twin 240mm front discs with two-piston calipers. Cycle World's testers found the Silver Wing's excellent fuel economy meant even hard highway riding still delivered around 200 miles per tank. Wet weight sits around 240kg (529 lbs), with a top speed near 175 km/h (109 mph). The platform was replaced by the larger-displacement GL650 for 1983.
