The ED name inherited its DNA directly from the previous year's CX500EC, carrying forward that model's sportier hardware into the larger-displacement 650 platform.

Power comes from the 673-674cc liquid-cooled 80-degree V-twin shared across the CX650 family, bored and stroked up from the original CX500's 497cc via an 82.5mm x 63mm configuration, delivering a claimed 60-65 hp depending on market tune, run through a 5-speed transmission with shaft final drive. Genuinely upgraded hardware carried over from the sportier CX developments of the era: TRAC anti-dive front forks (technology shared with the CX500 Turbo), dual disc brakes front and rear, and Honda's Pro-Link monoshock rear suspension in place of the older twin-shock setup — a meaningfully more sophisticated chassis than the standard, cruiser-styled CX650C.

Distinguishing features versus its CX650 siblings included a tubular frame, a new fuel tank with an integrated fuel gauge, and a bikini fairing giving it a genuinely sportier profile than either the Custom or Turbo. One long-term retrospective on the CX650E line, drawing on real owner feedback, found the platform rated as reliable, fun to ride, safe, and genuinely capable for touring duty — with the only real criticisms being its unsuitability for off-road use or outright racing, unsurprising given the model's touring-first design brief. The entire CX family wound down production in the mid-1980s as Honda's economics shifted and the platform reached the end of its natural lifecycle.
