Honda CX500 EC Sports Eurosport 1982-1983 Service Manual

Classic Motorbikes' own road test doesn't hold back: the CX500E Eurosport was, "at the time, arguably the prettiest, and most complete looking, Honda ever created." Launched in 1982, a year after the CX500 Turbo debuted, the Eurosport represented the sporty answer within the CX family — purpose-built for the UK and European markets, where it would genuinely have competed well in the middleweight category had the arrival of lighter-weight LC two-strokes and sportier four-cylinder rivals not stolen the era's spotlight.

Power comes from the 497cc liquid-cooled 80-degree V-twin, sharing the CX500's core "twisted twin" architecture — cylinders angled outward and heads twisted 22 degrees to clear the rider's knees, run through a 5-speed transmission with shaft final drive. A replacement 673cc version arrived in 1983, a year after the 500's introduction, cosmetically similar but mechanically enlarged with both bore and stroke increased to 82.5mm and 63mm respectively — meaning the original CX500E's run overlapped briefly with the larger-displacement successor before the 500 was phased out.

Styling marked a genuine departure from the original CX's rounded, sometimes-mocked lines: sharp, angular bodywork, a neat handlebar-mounted fairing, sweeping seat and side panels, and brushed aluminum Comstar wheels gave the Eurosport a distinctly more modern, purposeful look. A diamond-type frame, conceptually related to the CBX1000's chassis, delivered genuinely well-mannered handling when ridden with care, and a newly added fuel gauge on the instrument panel suited the model's sportier, longer-distance touring intent. The lessons Honda learned refining the CX500E's chassis and handling fed directly into the water-cooled CX Turbo developments that followed.
