CRF250L (2012-2020): "A Real World Machine" That Made Dual-Sport Riding Genuinely Approachable
MCN's own retrospective sums up the CRF250L's whole appeal in one honest line: "it's not often that a sub 25hp motorbike gets us excited, but this is a real world machine, that will give anyone with the slightest inclination for off-road a bike that will deliver on both road and trail." First released in May 2012 for the 2013 model year, Big Bike Reviews' own history traces its lineage directly: "with an ancestry that traces back to the Trailblazer XL250," the CRF250L drew its engine architecture from Honda's own CBR250R road bike, detuned and reworked specifically for dual-sport duty.
Power comes from a 249.6cc liquid-cooled DOHC 4-valve single, delivering genuinely friendly, non-intimidating output through a counterbalanced design and fuel injection — MCN's own testing found the engine "friendly and won't intimidate you, even on loose surfaces," with a claimed top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph). Motocross Hideout's own model breakdown splits this run into two genuine generations: "the first generation is from 2013-2016, and the second-gen is from 2017-2020," with the 2017 update bringing a larger throttle body, a new muffler design, revised PGM-FI mapping, a bigger airbox, and a larger-diameter exhaust header — real mechanical changes that added a claimed 2 hp over the earlier design, alongside a new speedometer with a tachometer, a folding gear lever, and updated tail light graphics matching the contemporary CRF450R motocross bike.
2017 also brought a genuine model expansion: the CRF250LA (adding ABS, with quick handlebar-button deactivation for the rear brake) and the CRF250L Rally, a more adventure-styled variant sharing the same updated engine and electronics. Motocross Hideout's own reliability assessment is genuinely reassuring for used-bike buyers: "the engine is already a proven and reliable engine, and the rest of the motorcycle is typical Honda... if you're riding it like a dual purpose motorcycle, on and off-road, you could get 20,000 miles or more on it before needing a major engine rebuild." A further update arrived across the whole CRF range in 2019, carrying into the CRF250L's final 2020 model year before Honda replaced the platform entirely with the larger-displacement CRF300L and CRF300 Rally — VikingBags' own comparison confirms "there was not much difference in both motorcycles, except for a 50cc increase in the displacement and a small increase in the power output," a genuine testament to how well-sorted this original CRF250L platform already was by the end of its run.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2012-2020 CRF250L running the way it was built to.
