Dirt Bike Magazine's own history is direct about 1992: the CR250R got a genuinely radical redesign that year, its most significant in a decade, but the new engine's added power immediately exposed a frame that couldn't keep up. Roger DeCoster spent years pushing Honda's engineers for a stronger chassis before real reinforcement finally arrived in 1994 — and by 1996, PulpMX's retrospective called that year's CR250R the culmination of accumulated upgrades, capping a full decade of the CR250R being, as they put it, "the gold standard of the 250 class."

The 249cc liquid-cooled two-stroke single grew progressively more powerful across this span, from a claimed 52 hp in 1992 to around 55-56 hp by 1996, run through a 5-speed transmission. Honda's engineers acknowledged the new-for-1992 engine actually lagged its predecessor in low-end response despite the outright power gain — a genuine trade-off riders debated throughout the era. 1993 brought geometry changes that Jeremy McGrath specifically praised for turning ability, geometry he reportedly stuck with for years afterward even after switching brands.

By 1994-1996, the CR250R had matured into a genuinely race-focused package: a chrome-moly steel frame at 212.5 lbs dry weight, tuned specifically for flex feedback that communicated front-end grip to the rider, paired with 43mm KYB inverted forks offering 315mm of travel and a Showa Pro-Link rear shock with 320mm travel — a combination that felt revolutionary compared to the "mushy" forks of earlier CRs. A 26.5-degree rake and 107mm of trail delivered genuinely sharp turn-in, with a single 240mm front disc and 2-piston caliper handling braking. The 1994-95 models wore a distinctive red/white/purple "Hurricane" graphics scheme, replaced in 1996 by a more aggressive black/red/white combination. This entire generation was replaced by an all-new aluminum-framed CR250R for 1997.
