CBR650F/CB650F (2014-Onwards): Honda's Affordable Middleweight Twins — One Naked, One Faired
Cycle World's own genuinely funny reporting mishap from launch captures how closely related these two bikes actually are: the magazine initially reported the naked CB650F from EICMA was coming to the US, only to correct themselves — "we were wrong. By one letter" — when Honda actually confirmed the faired CBR650F for American buyers first. Both share the same fundamental 649cc platform, with Rider Magazine's own launch coverage summing up Honda's design brief plainly: "supersport styling, a step up in performance from parallel twins, and an affordable price."
Power comes from a 649cc liquid-cooled transverse inline-four, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, a 67.0mm x 46.0mm bore and stroke, fed by Honda's Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system, delivering a claimed 85-87 hp at 11,000-12,000 rpm and roughly 46-47 lb-ft of torque at 8,000-10,500 rpm depending on source and market. Honda's own launch materials emphasize a genuinely deliberate tuning choice: "a muscular torque spread through the low- to midrange portions of the powerband, especially below 4,000 rpm," specifically calibrated for strong acceleration from a standing start rather than chasing peak horsepower numbers. A silent-type cam chain with vanadium-treated pins reduces friction, while special friction-reducing coatings on the piston pins and connecting rods improve durability — genuine engineering refinement for a bike positioned well below Honda's flagship CBR600RR and CBR1000RR in price.
Power runs through a 6-speed gearbox with cable-actuated wet clutch and O-ring chain final drive. MCN's own review notes the CBR650F's chassis differs meaningfully from its CBR600F predecessor: the outgoing bike's multi-adjustable inverted 41mm forks were replaced by non-adjustable, right-way-up units — a cost-saving measure that MCN's testing found "worked just fine" regardless, complementing genuinely precise steering. Header pipe design was inspired by the classic '70s CB400/4, a deliberate styling nod layered onto otherwise modern engineering. Wheelbase sits at 57.0 inches with a 25.5-degree rake and 4.0 inches of trail, seat height at 31.9 inches, claimed wet weight around 461 lbs, and a 4.5-gallon fuel tank delivering genuinely strong real-world economy — Cycle World's own coverage cites 59.3 mpg in European testing. ABS was offered as an option across both the CB650F naked and CBR650F faired variants, with this platform running through 2017 before Honda's next-generation update.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2014-onwards CBR650F/CB650F (F/A ABS) running the way it was built to.
