Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird (1997-2005): The Bike That Dethroned the ZZ-R1100

The Super Blackbird was named after the Lockheed SR-71 spy plane and built to dethrone Kawasaki’s ZZ-R1100 as king of the hypersports bikes, and it was tested at up to about 178 mph in 1997. It’s a sensible and utterly insane bike in one package, with a roomy riding position, a tall fairing and a big tank for a sport bike, so it’s a fast tourer as well as a speed machine. It was overtaken by the Suzuki Hayabusa in 1999 but kept its fans for its usability and reliability. The 1999 bike moved to Honda’s PGM-FI fuel injection with a sealed ram-air intake (fixing a flat-spot in the lower midrange) and added a HISS immobiliser, and a 24-litre tank. In 2001 it got a new dash with LCD panels, a taller windscreen and exhaust catalysts with air injection.

The engine is a 1,137cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline four with four valves per cylinder (16 in all), a bore and stroke of 79mm x 58mm and an 11:1 compression ratio. The 1997-1998 bikes use four 42mm Keihin carburetors, and the 1999 on bikes use fuel injection, with a high-pressure pump in the tank and a 4-1-2 into 2 stainless exhaust. Honda claims about 164 hp (122 kW) at 9,500-10,000 rpm and about 124 Nm (91.5 lb-ft) of torque at 7,250 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with chain final drive, and top speed is about 170-180 mph.

The frame is an aluminum twin-spar design with a 43mm cartridge fork and a Pro-Link single shock with preload and rebound adjustment. Brakes are dual 310mm front discs and a 256mm rear disc, with Honda’s dual combined braking system on later bikes, and tires are a 120/70ZR17 at the front and a 180/55ZR17 at the rear.

The wheelbase is 1,490mm (58.7 inches), and seat height is 810mm (31.9 inches). The tank holds about 23-24 litres (about 6 gallons). The Blackbird weighs about 223 kg (492 lbs) dry on the 1997 bike and about 225 kg (496 lbs) dry on the later ones, and about 252-255 kg (556-563 lbs) wet.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a CBR1100XX Super Blackbird running the way it was built to.
