CBR1000RR SC77 (2017-2018): "Next Stage Total Control" Marks the Fireblade's 25th Anniversary

Honda's own press materials for the 2017 launch leave no ambiguity about the significance: "first introduced overseas in 1992... Honda's largest CBR has continuously reset expectations of what an open-class sport bike should be, with a holistic 'Total Control' design approach." For the 25th anniversary, Honda's engineers took that founding philosophy — the power-to-weight balance that made the original CBR900RR revolutionary — and pushed it further than any prior CBR1000RR generation, delivering the SC77's genuinely comprehensive redesign, including throttle-by-wire and traction control for the first time in this model's history.

Power comes from a 999cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, delivering a claimed 189 hp at 13,000 rpm and 84 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm — a genuine 10 hp increase over the outgoing 2012-2016 generation. Honda's own engineering notes detail exactly how that gain was achieved: valve lift and timing optimized for higher engine speeds, with the rev ceiling raised from 12,250 to 13,000 rpm, alongside reworked piston thickness that retained the same overall weight while boosting compression from 12.3:1 to 13.0:1. Combined with a titanium muffler saving 6.2 lbs and an overall 33 lb weight reduction versus the previous ABS-equipped model, Honda achieved a genuine 14% improvement in power-to-weight ratio — the best in the CBR1000RR's entire history to that point, at a claimed 433 lb wet weight.

TotalMotorcycle's own review details the chassis work behind that improved handling: "the hollow die-cast twin-spar aluminum frame's rigidity balance has been significantly adjusted to give even sweeter handling with outstanding steering response." New throttle-by-wire technology finally brought selectable ride modes and traction control to the standard CBR1000RR for the first time, working together to let riders tailor power delivery and safety intervention to conditions or skill level — genuinely modern electronics that had been absent from every prior Fireblade generation. Braking uses dual 320mm front discs with Tokico four-piston calipers and a 220mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper. Cycle News's own coverage notes Honda framed this bike specifically against its own history of real-world performance: "since their debut, CBR liter bikes have been designed to perform in the real world, the way real customers use them" — a deliberate contrast against rivals chasing pure spec-sheet numbers. This SC77 platform carried through 2018 essentially unchanged before Honda's next major redesign arrived with the 2020 CBR1000RR-R.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2017-2018 CBR1000RR SC77 running the way it was built to.
