CBR1000RR SP2 (2017-2018): 500 Units, Bigger Valves, and Forged Marchesini Wheels
Cycle News's own first-look coverage doesn't undersell the SP2's exclusivity: "the more competition-focused, limited-production CBR1000RR SP2 comes with larger valves and lighter forged-aluminum Marchesini wheels" — built in a genuinely tiny run of just 500 units worldwide, positioned above even the already-premium SP as Honda's most track-focused, race-ready Fireblade for the model's 25th anniversary year. Wikipedia's own model history confirms the scale: "an even more exotic limited production 'SP2' variant with Marchesini forged wheels and with larger valves of which 500 units will be sold."
Power comes from the same reworked 999cc liquid-cooled inline-four as the standard SP, DOHC with 16 valves, delivering the base claimed 189 hp at 13,000 rpm and 84 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm — but Honda's own release notes the SP2 goes further still with genuinely larger intake and exhaust valves layered onto that architecture, extracting more from the same fundamental engine platform than either the standard CBR1000RR or the regular SP can manage. TotalMotorcycle's own review confirms the SP2 "incorporates all the special features of the CBR1000RR SP, and adds bigger intake and exhaust valves and lighter forged Marchesini wheels" — genuine hardware upgrades rather than cosmetic differentiation.
Everything the SP brings forward carries over as the SP2's foundation: Honda's first-ever production application of semi-active Öhlins Electronic Control (EC) suspension, with a 43mm NIX 30 EC fork and TTX 36 EC shock that electronically optimize damping settings to match riding conditions in real time, Brembo monobloc four-piston front brake calipers, a titanium fuel tank, and an anti-lock braking system with rear-lift control (RLC) that adjusts braking force according to lean angle while permitting hard trail braking into corners — genuinely sophisticated electronics for controlled, aggressive corner entry. The forged Marchesini wheels replace the standard bike's cast units specifically to cut unsprung and rotating mass, a change that matters more on track than street, where quicker direction changes and reduced gyroscopic effect translate directly into lap time. Honda's own marketing ties all of this back to the CBR1000RR's genuine racing pedigree — most successful 1000cc machine in Isle of Man TT history, with 23 wins to its name — framing the SP2 as the purest expression of that "Next Stage Total Control" philosophy for the small number of serious enthusiasts and professional racers it was built for.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2017-2018 CBR1000RR SP2 running the way it was built to.
