CB92 Benly Super Sport: Honda's First "CB" and a Racing Pedigree to Match
The CB92 carries genuine historical weight: it was the first mass-production Honda to wear the "CB" badge that would go on to define decades of Honda sport models, from the CB750 onward. It debuted in 1959, and that same year Hajime Kitano rode one to victory at the Mount Asama Volcano Race, cementing the CB92's reputation before most American riders had even seen one in a dealership.
Power comes from a 124cc OHC parallel twin breathing through a 20mm Keihin carburetor — larger than the standard C92's 18mm unit — with a 10:1 compression ratio yielding a claimed 15 hp at a genuinely wild 10,500 rpm, against the touring C92's 12 hp at 9,500 rpm. A 4-speed gearbox put that power down, and the little twin was good for a claimed 75 mph, remarkable for a 125cc roadster built in 1959.
The Super Sport treatment went well beyond the engine: brief aluminum mudguards, a small chain guard, a larger 2.3-gallon fuel tank styled after the prototype CB71/CE71 tanks, exposed rear suspension springs, and unique 8-inch magnesium hubs front and rear not shared with any other model in the lineup. Braking came from drum brakes with a twin-leading-shoe front, gripping 18-inch wheels at both ends.
Only around 1,000 CB92s are estimated to have been sold in the American market between 1960 and 1962, making genuine survivors properly rare today. This service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a CB92 Benly Super Sport's engine and driveline running the way Honda built it.
