X11/CB1100SF (1999-2001): "Believe Me When I Say This, This Is a Weapon of a Motorcycle"

Wikipedia's own technical account confirms exactly what BMW's engineering approach shares with Honda's: the X11 (also badged CB1100SF, or "X-Eleven") is based directly on the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird, "with a 1,137cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine and downforce inducing radiator shroud that increased cooling capacity and stability at high speed." Where the Blackbird chased outright top speed as a fully-faired sport-tourer built to challenge Kawasaki's Ninja ZX-11 for the world's-fastest-production-motorcycle title, the X11 took that same fundamental engine and stripped away the fairing entirely — a genuine engineering challenge, since naked bikes traditionally suffer from poorer radiator cooling and worse high-speed stability without bodywork to manage airflow.

Power comes from a 1,137cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four, 16 valves, a 79.0mm x 58.0mm bore and stroke, and an 11.0:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 139 hp at 9,000 rpm and 86 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm through a 5-speed transmission — genuinely detuned and running one fewer gear than the Blackbird's close-ratio 6-speed, in keeping with the X11's more street-focused, torque-driven character rather than the Blackbird's outright top-speed mission. Wikipedia's own account details the genuine engineering solution Honda devised for the naked-bike cooling and stability challenge: "an automotive looking plastic radiator shroud that attempted to combat the twin challenges faced by naked bikes... by effectively channelling air to the radiator, and by incorporating an aerodynamic lip that generated downforce at higher speeds" — a distinctive, genuinely functional styling element that gave the X11 its unmistakable front-end look.

MCN's own long-term owner reviews are consistently enthusiastic about the bike's real-world character and genuine performance headroom: one owner who traded in a Honda Hornet 600 found the X11 a revelation — "I was always moving up and down on gears on the 600cc Hornet... the CB1100X was great, all I needed was 1 to 3 gears the rest for more power. It's more powerful than the CBX1000Z and does not snake at high speeds," with the only real complaint being the bike's substantial heft. Another owner's testimonial describes genuinely serious track-focused modifications: "I have actually fitted Galespeed wheels, a Nitron rear shock, Öhlins internal springs and reworked forks. It now handles amazingly, HH sintered pads and braided hoses has the stopping department sorted too" — proof the fundamentally sound chassis rewards genuine investment for riders wanting to push it toward true sportbike performance. Claimed dry weight sits at 221kg (487 lbs), with a 22-litre fuel tank and 31.3-inch seat height. This platform ran through 2001 before Honda's later, further-refined CB1300 took over as the flagship naked in Honda's big-inline-four lineup.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1999-2001 X11/CB1100SF running the way it was built to.
