Benly 150 (C95/CA95): The "Baby Dream" That Introduced America to High-Revving Twins

Sold in Japan as the C95 and exported to the US as the CA95, the Benly 150 arrived in late 1959 wearing styling deliberately borrowed from Honda's larger CA72 and CA77 Dream models — earning it the nickname "Baby Dream" almost immediately. It was part of the wave of small Hondas that convinced a generation of young American riders to get on two wheels, backed by the era's famous "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" advertising campaign.

Power comes from a 154.6cc SOHC 360-degree parallel twin, a genuinely advanced piece of engineering for a small-displacement commuter bike of its day: an 8:1 compression ratio, a three-main-bearing crankshaft, and a single overhead cam driven by chain on the left side of the engine. Honda's engineers coaxed a claimed 16.5 hp at 10,000 rpm out of the little twin — more than 100 hp per liter, a figure most European sportbikes of the era couldn't touch, delivered through a 4-speed gearbox with chain final drive.

The pressed-steel backbone frame, shared conceptually with the smaller CA92, gave the Benly a distinctively smooth, enclosed look, and electric start was standard at a time when most American V-twins still relied on the kickstarter alone. Early production (1959-1963) ran a square headlight, an enclosed drive chain, and small rubber knee pads on the tank; the later model (1963-1966) dropped the enclosed chain and rear fender brace for a cleaner, simplified look. Colors across the run included black, scarlet red, blue, and white.

These early Honda twins are increasingly sought after by collectors, and NOS parts have become genuinely hard to find. This service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1959-1967 Benly 150's engine and driveline running the way Honda built it.
