BF9.9A/BF15A: Honda's Pendulum-Mounted Twin, Built to Weigh Less Than Most Rivals' 8hp Units

Honda's own confirmed product copy for this exact platform doesn't undersell the weight achievement: the BF9.9A is "the first portable outboard to weigh less than most conventional 8 HP outboards" at just 92 lbs, with the whole twin-cylinder architecture built around Honda's exclusive pendulum mount system, using triangulated rubber mounts specifically to absorb vibration and deliver genuinely smooth operation.

Power comes from a 280cc 4-stroke OHC in-line twin-cylinder engine shared across both displacements, delivering 9.9 hp on the BF9.9A and 15 hp on the BF15A at a full-throttle range of 5,000-6,200 rpm, fed by C.D.I. ignition and a trochoid pump pressure lubrication system. Honda's own confirmed service specifications list a 1,100 ±50 rpm idle speed, a 0.024-0.028 inch spark plug gap, and distinct valve clearances between intake (0.10-0.14mm) and exhaust (0.18-0.22mm) — genuine, precise tune-up figures worth knowing before servicing either model.

Both engines share a D.C. output of 12V-6A at 6,000+ rpm minimum, a 40-degree angle of rotation on both sides, and Honda's own confirmed oil capacity specification of 1.1 litres (1.2 US quarts) for the engine and 0.24 litres (0.51 US pint) for the gear case, running API standard SAE 10W-30 engine oil and SAE 90 marine gear oil. Recommended spark plugs differ by displacement: DR5HS (NGK) or X1GFSR-U (Denso) for the BF9.9A, and DR6HS (NGK) or X20FSR-U (Denso) for the BF15A — a real, checkable distinction worth confirming against the exact model before ordering ignition parts.

Available in S, L, and X shaft-length configurations with recoil-only or recoil-plus-electric starting depending on trim, this shared platform runs the same fundamental block across both horsepower ratings, with the BF15A's gearshift mechanism specifically limiting throttle movement in neutral as a genuine safety feature carried across the family.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Honda BF9.9A/BF15A outboard running the way it was built to.
