BF75A / BF90A: Honda's Carbureted 1.6-Litre Four, Retired in 2006 for a Fuel-Injected Replacement

The BF75A and BF90A were Honda's long-running mid-range four-stroke outboards, rated at 75 and 90 hp. They were based on the engine from the 1.6-litre Honda Civic, a 1,590cc inline-four. Unlike the models that replaced them, they were carbureted, with one carburetor per cylinder. Their flywheel alternator was rated at about 20 amps, which later became a limit as boats added electronics.

Honda replaced them in September 2006 with the BF75D and BF90D, which are based on the 1.5-litre engine from the Honda Fit. That engine is 94cc smaller, at 1,496cc, and adds Programmed Fuel Injection, a VTEC valve train on the BF90D and a 44-amp alternator, with up to 35 amps for dedicated battery charging. Honda claimed about 20 percent better fuel economy. A 2005 BF90A and a 2006-onward BF90D can look similar on the transom, but their fuel systems, electrics and many engine parts differ.

Because parts and procedures differ between the A and D series, confirm the model suffix on the engine's serial plate (BF90A versus BF90D) before ordering parts or working from a manual. The A-series carburetors, ignition and charging system have their own specifications, and the later D-series fuel-injection procedures don't apply to them.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Honda BF75A/BF90A outboard running the way it was built to.
