BF175A/BF200A/BF225A: A 60-Degree V6 Borrowed Straight From the Acura MDX Parts Bin

Honda's own confirmed marine materials describe the genuine automotive lineage behind this engine directly: a 24-valve, six-cylinder design delivering "all the durability and performance of the smooth-running Honda Acura MDX it was based on" — in a narrow, sixty-degree V profile outboard. That shared architecture is exactly why Honda's own factory documentation treats the BF175A as a base-manual derivative of the BF200A/225A rather than issuing it separately.

Power comes from a 3,471cc (211.7 cu in) 4-stroke SOHC 6-cylinder V6, an 89mm x 93mm bore and stroke, a 9.4:1 compression ratio, fed by Programmed Fuel Injection with a MicroComputer-controlled ignition system, delivering a claimed 200 hp on the BF200A and 225 hp on the BF225A — the BF225A specifically rated at 165.5 kW with 295 N·m (217.7 lb-ft) of maximum torque — at a full-throttle range of 5,000-6,000 rpm. Honda's own confirmed feature list highlights a dual-stage induction variable intake system using a plenum chamber with twin butterfly valves to precisely control intake air volume, plus VTEC on the higher-output BF225A for genuinely explosive throttle response.

Standard equipment across both models includes a 60-amp (756-watt) alternator, power trim and tilt, oil pressure and temperature alerts, a rev limiter, a speedometer pickup, a Fresh Water Flushport for flushing salt and debris after use, and a Built-In Pitot Tube in the gear case that eliminates drilling a separate speedo-pickup hole in the boat's hull.
