ATC200ES Big Red (1984): Honda's Three-Wheeled Answer to the Farm Truck

The "Big Red" name wasn't marketing fluff — this was Honda's genuinely utility-focused three-wheeler, built to haul, tow, and work rather than just play. Where most of Honda's ATC lineup in the mid-1980s chased recreational fun, the ATC200ES was engineered specifically around practical, everyday duty: a shaft final drive, a genuine reverse gear, and electric start alongside the usual recoil backup, all wrapped in a wide, stable three-wheel stance.

Power comes from a 192cc air-cooled OHC single, inclined 15 degrees, with a 65mm bore and 57.8mm stroke and a 7.8:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 13 hp and roughly 10.6 lb-ft of torque, fed through a Keihin PD55A piston-valve carburetor with a 22mm throttle bore. What genuinely sets the Big Red apart from typical sporting ATCs of the era is the drivetrain: a 5-speed constant-mesh transmission with a true reverse gear — engaged through an N-1-2-3-4-5 forward pattern with reverse accessed from neutral — running through an automatic wet multidisc centrifugal clutch and shaft final drive rather than the chain drive common on recreational three-wheelers.

The chassis pairs a telescopic front fork with 3.2 inches of travel against a rigid rear end — no rear suspension at all, in keeping with the utility-hauler mission this machine was built for. Front and rear brakes both use cable-operated drums, with the front lever on the right handlebar and the rear controlled by both a left-hand lever and a right foot pedal — genuinely dual-redundant braking for a working vehicle. CDI ignition delivers spark through an NGK DR8ES-L or Denso X24ESR-U plug, with initial timing set at 10 degrees BTDC advancing to 30 degrees at full advance. Dry weight comes in at 374.9 lbs, with an 11.5-litre fuel tank and a genuinely low 27-inch seat height that kept the Big Red accessible despite its utility-hauler dimensions.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1984 ATC200ES Big Red's engine, drivetrain, and electrical system running the way it was built to.
