Sportster XR1200X (2011): The Sportiest Sportster, with Fully Adjustable Showa Suspension Standard
Harley first sold the XR1200 in the US in 2010, after riders complained it was sold only in Europe. For 2011 the XR1200X replaced it. The price rose by $1,000 to $11,799, and the orange paint scheme was dropped. What buyers got for that was upgraded suspension that had cost $1,500 as an accessory, full-floating front brake rotors, a blacked-out look and orange pinstripes on the wheel rims. With a modest race kit it was ready for the new AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series. Colours were Black Denim and White Hot Denim.
Power comes from the air-cooled 1,202cc Evolution V-twin, with a 88.9mm x 96.8mm bore and stroke and a 10:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 98-100 Nm (72-74 lb-ft), and Harley claims about 90 hp at 7,000 rpm. The gearbox is a 5-speed with a 57/38 chain primary and a 68/29 belt final drive. The exhaust is a black upswept straight-shot high-performance dual-muffler system.
The suspension is the headline. The fork is a 43mm Showa Big Piston Fork with 4.9 inches of travel, replacing the XR1200's non-adjustable fork. Compression and rebound are adjusted by screws on top of the fork tubes, and preload at the axle holder. At the rear, dual Showa shocks with piggyback nitrogen reservoirs give 3.5 inches of travel and are fully adjustable too.
Brakes are dual front discs (292mm) with four-piston calipers. Wheels are black three-spoke cast aluminum with orange pinstripes, 18 inches at the front and 17 at the rear, wearing Dunlop Qualifier D209 tires, a 120/70ZR18 and a 180/55ZR17. Confirmed figures list a 29-29.3-degree rake, a 2,225mm length and a 795mm seat height. The tank holds about 13.3 litres, and dry weight is about 250 kg (551 lbs).
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011 Sportster XR1200X running the way it was built to.
