Iron 883 (2022): The Dark Custom Original's Final Ride
The Iron 883 launched Harley's "Dark Custom" series back in 2009, and 2022 marked its last year in production — the entire air-cooled Evolution Sportster platform was phased out that year as Harley shifted toward the liquid-cooled Sportster S, largely driven by tightening emissions standards in key markets. It's fitting that the model closes out its 13-year run as one of the best-selling and most recognizable bikes Harley ever built, credited with setting the visual template — blacked-out, stripped-down, minimal chrome — that half the modern cruiser market has since copied.
Power comes from the rubber-mounted 883cc air-cooled Evolution V-twin, running a 3.0 in. bore and 3.811 in. stroke. Harley typically published torque rather than horsepower for this model, and factory torque figures shifted somewhat across the 2009-2022 run depending on emissions calibration and market, so treat any single number as approximate for a given year. Handling and ride quality benefited from mid-cycle upgrades to emulsion coil-over rear shocks with adjustable preload and cartridge-style front forks, changes that stuck for the rest of the model's life.
Styling stayed true to the Dark Custom brief throughout: chopped fenders, a tuck-and-roll solo seat inspired by early bobbers, and blacked-out 9-spoke wheels with a machined mechanical accent. A genuinely low 25.7 in. laden seat height made it one of the most accessible entry points into Harley ownership for smaller or newer riders. 2022 dry weight came in at 545 lbs, with a 3.3-gallon tank and a 59.6 in. wheelbase.
