Iron 883 (2016): "The Dark Pioneer" Gets New Suspension, But Keeps Its Charm

Ultimate Motorcycling's own first-ride review captures 2016's genuinely modest but meaningful update: "the updates for this year make for a better motorcycle, even if the changes don't turn the world on its head." The Iron 883's original 2009 debut established it as one of the very first Dark Custom models — Motorcycle.com's own listing calls it "a dark pioneer of raw, blacked-out, stripped-down custom aggression" — and 2016 refined that formula with genuinely new suspension hardware rather than a full redesign.

Power comes from the air-cooled Evolution V-twin, delivering a claimed 53 hp at 5,750 rpm and 52 lb-ft of torque at 3,750 rpm through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. Ultimate Motorcycling's testing found new emulsion-technology twin rear shocks — mixing oil and air within the damping chamber — genuinely softened the ride over urban bumps and potholes, even while acknowledging the fundamental limitation: suspension travel stayed unchanged at 3.6 inches front and just 1.6 inches rear, numbers too short for engineers to work miracles with no matter how the internals were refined.

Styling stays true to the Dark Custom formula that made the Iron a cult favorite: extra blacked-out finishes throughout give it what that same review calls "a bit of a menacing look," paired with chopped fenders and minimal chrome. Front and rear tires run Michelin Scorcher rubber (100/90 R19 front), with hydraulic disc brakes at both ends. Dry weight comes in around 553-565 lbs depending on configuration, with a genuinely low 25.7-inch seat height that's kept the Iron a popular entry point for newer or smaller riders. Ultimate Motorcycling's reviewer specifically called out the bike's approachability: "a big bonus of the Iron 883 is that it is fun for novices and experienced riders to swing a leg over." 2016 colors included Charcoal Denim, Olive Gold, and Hard Candy Custom Gold Flake, with pricing starting at $8,849.
