Sportster SuperLow XL883L (2011): The Beginner-Focused Redesign, with an 18-Inch Front Wheel and a 4.5-Gallon Tank

Harley built the 2011 SuperLow for newer riders and says it was an open invitation for less experienced motorcyclists to get out and ride. Before the redesign, 55 percent of 883 Low customers were women and 40 percent were first-bike buyers, and Harley designed the SuperLow around them. Reviewers say it's essentially an all-new model that only resembles the Low. It has new suspension calibrations front and rear, new wheel and tire sizes, a new fork and gas tank, and a better-padded solo seat. The new 18-inch five-spoke front wheel is lighter than the Low's 19-inch, which cuts unsprung weight and steering effort, and the new triple trees give 5.7 inches of trail.

Power comes from the air-cooled 883cc Evolution V-twin, with a 76.2mm x 96.8mm bore and stroke and an 8.9:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 70 Nm at 3,750 rpm. The gearbox is a 5-speed with a 34/57 chain primary, and the engine is rubber-mounted in a steel frame. The ECU was relocated from under the seat, which made room for the deeper solo saddle and the larger tank.

Suspension is a 39mm Showa fork with about 4.1 inches of travel, and coil-over preload-adjustable rear shocks with about 2.5 inches. The front wheel is 18 x 3.5 inches and the rear is 17 x 4.5, both black split five-spoke cast aluminum with machined rims. Tires are Michelin Scorcher 11 radials, a 120/70ZR18 front and a 150/60ZR17 rear. The tank is a 4.5-gallon (17-litre) unit, bigger than the Low's, and the SuperLow has mid-mount foot controls.

Confirmed figures list a 2,215mm (87.2-inch) length, a 1,500mm (59.1-inch) wheelbase, 100mm of ground clearance and 145mm of trail. Seat height is 25.5 inches laden and 26.8 inches unladen. Weight is 251 kg (553 lbs) dry and 260 kg (573 lbs) in running order. Colours included Vivid Black, Cool Blue Pearl, and two-tones in Merlot Sunglo/Vivid Black and Birch White/Sedona Orange.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011 Sportster SuperLow XL883L running the way it was built to.
