Forty-Eight (2016): Beefier Forks Give the Bulldog-Stance Sportster Genuine New Confidence
Ultimate Motorcycling's own review pinpoints exactly what changed and why it mattered: "the most important changes for the 2016 Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight are right up front; the Sportster 48 gets beefy new 49mm forks (up 10mm from last year, and now with cartridge damping) with stronger triple clamps and a fork brace." The result, per that same review, is "immediately apparent when putting it into a turn" — a genuinely more substantial, confidence-inspiring front end compared to the outgoing model, which wasn't bad, just noticeably softer.
Power comes from the air-cooled Evolution V-twin, 1,202cc, delivering a claimed 66 hp with roughly 71 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm, run through a 5-speed transmission. Ultimate Motorcycling's testing found the same excellent Michelin Scorcher 31 tire carried over, now mounted on a fat 130mm-wide, new 16-inch 9-spoke cast aluminum wheel that replaced the traditional laced wheel from prior years — a genuine styling and unsprung-weight update. That increased front-end stiffness let Harley tuck the fork angle in by 1.3 degrees, giving the 551-lb claimed wet-weight bike a noticeably more agile feel than its stance might suggest.
The rear end got its own quiet refinement: still a scant 1.6 inches of travel — a genuine limitation Ultimate Motorcycling's reviewer flagged directly — but now running a nitrogen-charged emulsion-style shock design with a variable-rate spring and threaded preload adjustment. Lean angle shifted slightly for 2016, settling at a uniform 27.1 degrees (a full degree more on the left side, 0.7 degrees less on the right), though the reviewer noted peg feelers still touch down with some regularity given the bike's genuinely low-slung 28-inch seat height. The signature 2.1-gallon peanut tank — first appearing on a Harley back in 1948, the source of the model's name — remains the styling centerpiece, paired with the fat front tire and lowered front and rear suspension that give the Forty-Eight its distinctive "bulldog" stance. 2016 pricing started at $11,199.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016 Forty-Eight running the way it was built to.
