Sportster Forty-Eight XL1200X (2011): "An Urban Brawler That Drips Attitude from Every Element"
Harley's own line on the Forty-Eight is that it's an urban brawler dripping attitude from every element, from the fat balloon tires to the all-steel peanut tank to the solo seat. Custom touches define this bulldog of a bike: a slammed speedometer, under-bar mounted mirrors and a seat height of about 26 inches for a low profile, with the peanut tank and big 16-inch wheels giving it a menacing look. The Forty-Eight is named for the year 1948, when Harley first used that style of small tank. US pricing for 2011 started at $10,499.
Power comes from the air-cooled 1,202cc Evolution V-twin, with a 88.9mm x 96.8mm (3.5 x 3.8-inch) bore and stroke and a 9.7:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 98-107 Nm (72-79 lb-ft), depending on the source. The gearbox is a 5-speed with a 38/57 chain primary and belt final drive. The exhaust is a chrome staggered shorty with dual slash-cut mufflers.
The chassis is a mild-steel tubular frame with a 39mm fork and coil-over rear shocks that are adjustable for preload. The wheels are black steel laced, 16 inches at both ends, with an MT90B16 front tire and a 150/80B16 rear. Brakes are a single front disc (292mm) and a single rear disc.
Confirmed figures list a 2,255mm length, a 1,520mm wheelbase, 100mm of ground clearance and 119mm of trail. Seat height is 26.0 inches laden and 26.8 inches unladen (710mm in Harley's European figures). The peanut tank holds just 7.95 litres (2.1 gallons), and weight is 251 kg (553 lbs) dry and about 260 kg (573 lbs) in running order.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011 Sportster Forty-Eight XL1200X running the way it was built to.
