Seventy-Two (2016): "True Old School Outlaw Soul," Modern Suspension Included
Harley's own 2016 marketing leans hard into the era this bike evokes: "authentic '70s chopper attitude meets modern power," featuring "feet forward, fists in the wind" styling and a genuinely rebellious "old school outlaw soul." Ultimate Motorcycling's buyer's guide details the visual formula that makes the Seventy-Two so recognizable: a 2.1-gallon Peanut tank (a design first appearing on Harleys back in 1948), mini-ape handlebars, a 21-inch front wheel paired with a 16-inch rear, laced wheels, whitewall Dunlops, and generous chrome throughout.
Power comes from the air-cooled Evolution V-twin shared across the 1200 Sportster range, run through a 5-speed transmission. Ultimate Motorcycling's review notes 2016's genuine mechanical news: new emulsion-technology shocks and cartridge forks arrived across the entire Sportster lineup, with Harley's own marketing confirming "all 2016 Sportster models will tame rough roads with all-new front and rear suspension and improved seats working together to enhance rider comfort and control" — a real functional upgrade layered onto the bike's deliberately old-school looks. Despite its radical, raked-out appearance, Ultimate Motorcycling found the chassis geometry genuinely manageable: a reasonable 32.1-degree rake and a wheelbase just under 61 inches keep the Seventy-Two easier to handle than its chopper-inspired stance might suggest.
Confidence-inspiring front and rear brakes distinguish the Seventy-Two from the genuine 1970s garage choppers that inspired it — a real practical advantage those original bikes never had. Optional Hard Candy Custom paint, a large-metal-flake finish Harley describes as "a shining declaration of independence," was available in Gold Flake or Black Gold Flake finishes, alongside optional ABS and Harley's Smart Security System. Ultimate Motorcycling's guide also notes a genuinely thoughtful ergonomic touch for this model year: the seat was improved specifically to make the bike more accessible for taller riders, addressing a common complaint about the Sportster's compact, low-slung stance.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016 Seventy-Two running the way it was built to.
