Sportster Seventy-Two XL1200V (2013): The ’70s Chopper-Style Sportster with Big-Flake Paint and Whitewalls

Harley calls the Seventy-Two a metal-flake dream machine, a Sportster on a trip back to the days when the cool kids rode a Sting-Ray and the big boys parked choppers on the curb. The name comes from East Los Angeles’s famous Route 72 (Whittier Boulevard), and the bike is a respectful nod to that custom culture. It has Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint (and Coloma gold flake) on the tank and fenders, a stainless steel mini-ape handlebar on a two-inch riser, a solo seat, a chopped rear fender with a side-mounted plate, chrome fender struts, and an 8-inch round chrome air cleaner cover. The wheels are chrome laced steel with narrow Dunlop whitewall tires, an MH90-21 front and a 150/80B16 rear. The 2.1-gallon peanut tank has a lightening-hole mounting bracket, and the powertrain has a gray powdercoat with chrome covers. The Australian launch price was about $17,995.

Power comes from the air-cooled 1,202cc Evolution V-twin, the “Blockhead” first bolted into a Harley in 1984, with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. It’s a 5-speed with belt final drive, and the exhaust is staggered with chrome. The bike has forward controls and chrome coil-over rear shocks with preload adjustment.

Confirmed figures list a claimed dry weight of about 247 kg and a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,000 lbs (453.6 kg). Harley’s 2.1-gallon tank is quoted as 7.95 litres, so the bike isn’t built for long hauls.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Sportster Seventy-Two XL1200V running the way it was built to.
