Sportster 1200 Custom XL1200C H-D1 (2011): "A Sportster Model with Fattitude" and the Debut of H-D1 Factory Customization
Harley launched the new 1200 Custom mid-year as a Sportster with a wide front end and a chunky 16-inch tire. The wide-spaced forks and "bobberish" 130/90 front tire replaced the narrow front end and skinny 21-inch wheel of earlier Customs. Its headline feature was H-D1 factory customization. Buyers could use Harley's online Bike Builder to choose from seven option categories: wheels, handlebars, seats, paint, foot control position, security system and engine finish. These options were installed as the bike was assembled, giving more than 2,600 combinations, with a delivery turnaround of around four weeks. Paint options ran from six solid colours ($290) and five two-tones ($500) to two $600 custom schemes, Cool Blue Pearl with scalloped graphics and White Hot Pearl with hot pink flames. Base pricing started at $10,299.
New for 2011 were chrome five-spoke cast wheels (16 x 3.0 inches front and rear) replacing the old laced and slotted-disc wheels, wider fork spacing with polished triple clamps, a reshaped eyebrow over the headlamp, a smaller LED tail lamp, a pull-back handlebar and re-tuned front suspension. Tires are Michelin Scorcher 31, a 130/90B16 front and a 150/80B16 77H rear.
Power comes from the air-cooled 1,200cc Evolution V-twin, with a 88.9mm x 96.8mm bore and stroke and a 9.7:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Torque is about 98 Nm (72 lb-ft) at 3,200 rpm. The engine is black powder-coated with chrome covers. Trail is 105mm, and the 2012 update that followed added black side covers.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2011 Sportster 1200 Custom XL1200C H-D1 running the way it was built to.
