Springer Softail FXSTS (1999): The Last-Year Evolution Springer, with New Tank Decals

The 1999 Springer Softail is the last Evolution-powered Springer before the Twin Cam 88B arrived for 2000. It carried over largely unchanged, with new fuel tank decals on the Springer Softail and the Softail Custom. Its look is lean and custom: an exposed-spring Springer front end, laced wheels, a teardrop tank and a bobtail rear fender in Harley's FX custom stance. Collectors prize the last Evolution Springers, and the colours ran from Vivid Black to special-order two-tones such as Sinister Blue Pearl/Diamond Ice.

Power comes from the air-cooled 1,340cc (80 cu in) Evolution V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves and two valves per cylinder. Its bore and stroke are about 89mm x 108mm (3.5 x 4.25 inches), and it's fed by a 40mm constant-velocity carburetor. The gearbox is a 5-speed with belt final drive. The Evolution engine in the 1999 Softail line has silver-painted heads, cylinders, cam cover, transmission and primary covers. Fuel economy runs about 38-45 mpg, and the tank holds about 5 gallons.

The frame is the Softail design, with the hidden shocks that give the look of a hardtail, and the Springer fork replaces the telescopic fork used on the other Softails. Check the VIN before ordering parts: the 1999 Evolution engine, carburetor and fuel parts won't fit the 2000-and-later Twin Cam 88B Springer.
