Springer Softail FXSTS/FXSTSI (2002): The Twin Cam Era Meets a 1940s Front End
Autoevolution's own review confirms the genuine mechanical continuity behind this year's model: "the 2002 MY Harley Davidson FXSTS/FXSTSI Springer Softail sports an air-cooled, 1450cc, Twin Cam 88B V-Twin powerhouse paired to a five-speed manual transmission" — the same fundamental engine architecture carried across every Softail in Harley's 2002 lineup, wrapped here around the model's signature vintage-inspired front suspension.
Power comes from the Twin Cam 88B, a rigid-mounted, vibration-isolated 1,449cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, delivering a claimed 63-67 hp at 5,200 rpm and roughly 78-86 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm depending on carbureted (FXSTS) or fuel-injected (FXSTSI, ESPFI) configuration, run through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. As on every rigid-mounted Softail this generation, twin counterbalancers do the work of keeping the hard-mounted engine's vibration from reaching the rider.
The Springer name refers to genuine functional hardware, not just styling: a chrome "Springer"-style front fork — a real parallelogram design harking back to Harley's pre-telescopic-fork era — delivers 32 degrees of rake and 133.4mm of trail through a mild steel rectangular-section backbone frame with twin downtubes. The bike rolls on a 21-inch laced front wheel and 16-inch laced rear wheel, wrapped in Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series II D402 tires (MH90-21 front, MT90B16 rear), with a single-piston front caliper and four-piston rear caliper handling braking duty. Genuine period detailing includes a full floating front fender with an integrated running light, leather saddlebags, fishtail mufflers, wide whitewall tires, a tombstone taillight, a passenger pillion with a chrome hand rail, and a black powder-coat finish on the engine. Seat height sits at 654mm (25.7 in.) laden, with a 1,660mm wheelbase and dry weight around 656 lbs.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2002 FXSTS/FXSTSI Springer Softail running the way it was built to.
