Harley Davidson FXSTS Softail Springer 2000 Service Manual

Harley's own description of this bike says it's modeled after the 1948 Panhead: an exposed spring front suspension, a full floating fender, and a classic horn. It adds tooled leather, crossover exhaust pipes with dual fishtail mufflers, fringed saddlebags, a tombstone taillight and whitewall tires. Harley calls the result "a unique blend of old and new technology." The new part for 2000 was the engine, because this was the first model year the Softail range ran the Twin Cam. The Springer used the counterbalanced 88B, not the rubber-mounted 88 found on the Touring and Dyna lines, because the Softail's rigid mounting needed internal balancers.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder, pushrod-operated valves, hydraulic lifters, and a 95.3 x 101.6mm bore and stroke. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,200 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 5-speed transmission.

Confirmed figures list an 80/90-19 front tire and 130/90-16 rear, a single 292mm disc at each wheel with a two-piston caliper at the front and a four-piston caliper at the rear, a 25.7-inch seat height, and a 65.4-inch wheelbase. The tank holds 18.9 litres and dry weight is about 315kg (694 lbs).

Early Twin Cam engines have a known inspection point in the cam chain tensioner system, so it's worth checking for service records on any example.
