Softail Night Train FXSTB (1999): The Last Evolution Night Train, Black-on-Black with a 21-Inch Front Wheel
The Night Train launched in 1998 as Harley's blacked-out factory custom Softail, and 1999 is its final year on the 1,340cc Evolution engine, before the Twin Cam 88B arrived for 2000. It has a minimalist solo seat, drag-style handlebars and a factory blacked-out driveline, on the Softail frame with its hidden rear shocks. The original front wheel was a 21-inch laced unit. Owners often call the late carbureted Evo Night Train a rare find.
Power comes from the air-cooled 1,340cc (about 1,338cc, 80 cu in) Evolution V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves and two valves per cylinder. It is carbureted and makes about 56-58 hp and about 97 Nm (roughly 71-72 lb-ft) of torque, which is enough for a top speed of about 160 km/h (100 mph). The gearbox is a 5-speed with belt final drive. Fuel economy is rated at about 7 L/100 km.
The Evolution Night Trains share almost nothing but basic hardware with the 2000-and-later Twin Cam 88B bikes, so the engine, carburetor and electrical parts are not interchangeable. Because the Night Train is so popular with customizers, many surviving bikes have been modified with Screamin' Eagle kits, big-bore cylinders, different wheels and drag bars, so confirm what a customer's example actually carries before ordering parts.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1999 Softail Night Train FXSTB running the way it was built to.
