Softail Deuce FXSTD/FXSTDI (2006): Lean, Narrow Custom with a 17-Inch Solid Rear Wheel
Harley’s 2006 pitch for the Deuce is that if you take a good long look at its lean, narrow design, you see why no one else can build a motorcycle like Harley-Davidson. It has a raked-out fork with premium chrome fork sliders, a chrome riser and low-rise handlebar, a straight-cut dragster rear fender, hidden rear suspension and a solid 17-inch rear wheel with a wide 160mm tire. A Badlander-inspired seat and a stretched tank with a full-length chrome console complete the long, low profile, and the front wheel is a 21-inch laced wheel. The 2006 US price was $16,995 plus $275 destination.
Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counterbalanced Twin Cam 88B, an air-cooled 1,450cc V-twin with an 8.9:1 compression ratio, “carbureted or with smooth-operating EFI”. The FXSTDI has fuel injection, and the FXSTD is the carbureted designation. The gearbox is a 5-speed with belt final drive. The belt has 135 teeth on 32/70 pulleys, and the parts data lists an RA8HC spark plug, an H30292 oil filter and a GYZ20HL battery.
The fork is a 41mm telescopic with chrome sliders. Tires are a Dunlop MH90-21 front and a 160/70B17 rear. Harley’s Softail rear suspension gives about 4 inches of travel. Confirmed figures for the 2004 Deuce, which is the same hardware, list brake rotors of 11.5 inches front and rear with four-piston calipers, and a dry weight of about 645 lbs and about 685 lbs in running order, so check the figures for your bike.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Softail Deuce FXSTD FXSTDI running the way it was built to.
