Softail Deuce FXSTD/FXSTDI (2001): "The Most Radically New Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Since the Hydra-Glide"
Harley's own confirmed dealer copy for this exact model doesn't hold back on the genuine ambition behind it: "the Deuce is the most radically new Harley-Davidson motorcycle since the Hydra-Glide. Every part has been touched. The sleek chrome front end could hang in an art gallery. The tank is a new stretched design. There's a new rear fender as original as it is clean. Same with the reflector-optic bullet turn signals. Then there's the 17-inch rear wheel and wide tire. The Twin Cam 88B engine sends it all down the road in one fluid motion."
Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, an air-cooled 1,449-1,450cc V-twin, a 95.3mm x 101.6mm bore and stroke, and an 8.5-8.9:1 compression ratio (sources vary slightly), delivering a claimed 62.5-63 hp (46-47 kW) at 5,200-5,300 rpm and roughly 78.2 lb-ft (106 Nm) of torque at 3,200-3,500 rpm, fed by either a carburetor (FXSTD) or Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (FXSTDI), through a 5-speed wet multi-disc manual transmission with chain primary drive and belt final drive.
Standard equipment included a black powdercoated engine with chrome covers, a stretched one-piece fuel tank, chrome front forks, chrome risers with low-rise flat-track-style handlebars, chrome fender supports with hidden hardware, chrome bullet turn signals, a full-length chrome tank console, a laced front wheel, and a genuinely distinctive 17-inch disc rear wheel wrapped in a wide 160-section tire — a real departure from the more traditional laced-wheel rear ends found on other 2001 Softails. Braking used a single 292mm disc at each wheel, both with 4-piston calipers.
Confirmed factory dimensions list a 28.3-inch seat height, a 66.6-inch wheelbase, and 4.9-gallon (18.5-litre) fuel capacity. Dry weight ranges 645-672 lbs depending on fuel-system configuration and exact source.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2001 Softail Deuce FXSTD/FXSTDI running the way it was built to.
