Softail Custom FXSTC (2009): A New Low-Profile Front Fender over a 21-Inch Laced Wheel

The Softail Custom is Harley's laid-back cruiser version of the Softail, with ape-hanger bars, a 21-inch laced front wheel and a bobtail rear fender. The 2009 model is a carryover, with one visible change: a new low-profile front fender that hugs the 21-inch laced wheel. The seat is a tufted king/queen style with chrome buttons that flows into an integrated aluminum one-piece backrest for rider and passenger.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 95.3 x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Claimed torque is roughly 117-125 Nm (86-92 lb-ft), depending on the source. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a 9-plate wet clutch and belt final drive. The engine is black powder-coated with chrome covers, and the exhaust is a chrome staggered shorty with dual mufflers.

The wheels are a chrome-profile laced aluminum 21-inch front and a polished slotted-disc forged aluminum 17-inch rear. Tires are an MH90-21 front and a 200/55R17 rear. Brakes are a single 292mm disc at each wheel, with a four-piston front caliper. The fork is a 41.3mm telescopic with chrome dust covers (5.6 inches of travel), with a hidden horizontal coil-over rear shock (4.3 inches). Equipment also includes a chrome horseshoe oil tank, a chrome bullet headlamp, a nostalgic chrome tank console and forward-mounted rider footpegs. Parts data lists a 133-tooth 20mm drive belt, an RA8HC spark plug and an H30292 oil filter.

Confirmed dimensions list a 94.5-inch length, a 66.9-inch wheelbase, a 32-degree rake with 5.0-5.8 inches of trail (sources differ) and 5.1 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 26.4 inches laden and 28.3 inches unladen. The tank holds 5 gallons. Weight is 672 lbs as shipped and 703 lbs in running order.
