Softail Custom 1995-1996: The Original Factory Chopper Formula
Where the FL-badged Softails leaned into fendered, touring-inspired nostalgia, the FXSTC Softail Custom stuck to the chopper side of the Softail family tree — a raked-out 21-inch front wheel, staggered shorty dual exhaust, and stripped-back styling that read as factory-built custom rather than dressed-up cruiser. It's the model that helped define what a factory chopper could look like straight off the showroom floor.
Power comes from the 80-cubic-inch (1,340cc) air-cooled Evolution V-twin, carbureted, making a claimed 57 hp at 5,000 rpm and 71.5 lb-ft of torque at 2,350 rpm, running through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. The front end runs an MH90H-21 tire against a 130/90H-16 rear — a genuinely distinctive stance next to the 16-inch-front Heritage and Fat Boy models sharing the same Softail platform.
The hidden-shock Softail chassis underneath keeps the same hardtail illusion as the rest of the range, giving the FXSTC a rigid-look profile without the rigid-frame ride. Seat height sits around 29 inches, and the bike weighs in at roughly 608.5 lbs — light enough to feel nimble by big-twin cruiser standards of the era.
Chopper-style customs get ridden hard and modified often — this factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1995-1996 Softail Custom's Evolution engine and driveline running the way it should.
