Softail Custom 1993-1994: The Factory Chopper Formula, Early in Its Run
Two years before the mid-'90s refinements that later Softail Customs would see, the 1993-1994 FXSTC carried the same fundamental chopper-inspired brief that had defined the model since its 1984 introduction — Harley's first factory-built custom trim, built to prove a raked-out, stripped-back look could come straight off the showroom floor rather than requiring an aftermarket build.
Power comes from the 80-cubic-inch (1,340cc) air-cooled Evolution V-twin, carbureted, delivering a claimed 57 hp at 5,000 rpm and roughly 71.5 lb-ft of torque at 2,350 rpm, run through a 5-speed transmission with belt final drive. A raked-out 21-inch front wheel wrapped in an MH90H-21 tire gives the Softail Custom its distinctively long, low stance, paired with a 130/90H-16 rear tire — a genuinely different profile from the 16-inch-front Fat Boy and Heritage models sharing the same Softail platform that year.
Styling stayed true to the factory-chopper formula: staggered shorty dual exhaust pipes, minimal chrome relative to the touring-oriented FL-badged Softails, and the hidden-shock Softail chassis that keeps the hardtail illusion intact while delivering genuine ride comfort the original rigid-frame Harleys never offered. A 41mm front fork and single disc brakes front and rear handled suspension and stopping duty, with the lightweight chassis giving the FXSTC a genuinely nimble feel relative to its heavier stablemates.
