Softail Night Train FXSTB (2009): A Minimalist, Blacked-Out Softail with a 21-Inch Laced Front Wheel

Harley's own Night Train formula is black-on-black and stripped to the bone, with a more minimalist design and a lighter dry weight than the rest of the Softail line, which suits it to nimble handling. For 2009 it carried over with a new low-profile front fender. The styling is a low-slung Badlander-style seat, a drag-style handlebar on six-inch risers and forward-mounted foot controls. It has a bobtail rear fender, a large 21-inch laced steel front wheel and a black cast-aluminum rear wheel.

Power comes from the rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 96B, an air-cooled 1,584cc V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. It has a 95.3 x 111.1mm bore and stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio, fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. Claimed torque is roughly 117-125 Nm (86-92 lb-ft), depending on the source. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with a wet multi-plate clutch, a chain primary and belt final drive. The engine is black powder-coated with wrinkle-black and texture-black covers, and the exhaust is a chrome staggered shorty dual.

The chassis is a mild-steel tubular frame with a 41.3mm telescopic fork with "beer can" covers (5.6 inches of travel) and a hidden horizontal coil-over rear shock (4.3 inches). Brakes are a single 292mm disc at each wheel, with a four-piston front caliper and a two-piston rear. Tires are an MH90-21 front and a 200/55R17 rear. Parts data lists a 133-tooth 20mm drive belt, an RA8HC spark plug, an H30292 oil filter and a YTX20HL-BS battery.

Confirmed dimensions list a 66.9-inch wheelbase, a 94.5-94.9-inch length, a rake of 32-33.5 degrees (sources differ) with 5.0 inches of trail and 5.1 inches of ground clearance. Seat height is 25.2 inches laden and 26.8 inches unladen. The tank holds 5 gallons, and weight is 656 lbs dry and about 682 lbs wet.
