Softail Standard FXST/FXSTI (2002): "Classically and Conservatively Styled" — Precisely So Owners Could Wreck That

Harley's own period marketing describes the Softail Standard's entire purpose in one line: "the Softail Standard is classically and conservatively styled so owners can customize from mild to wild." It's a genuinely deliberate blank-canvas approach — minimal factory flourish specifically so the aftermarket and individual owners could take the platform wherever they wanted, a philosophy that's carried this nameplate through every generation since.

Power comes from the Twin Cam 88B, a rigid-mounted, vibration-isolated 1,449cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin with pushrod-operated overhead valves and hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, delivering a claimed 67 hp at 5,200 rpm and roughly 78-86 lb-ft of torque at 3,200-3,500 rpm depending on carbureted (FXST) versus fuel-injected (FXSTI) configuration — Harley's own marketing simply calls it "filled with smooth power." As with every rigid-mounted Softail engine of this era, the 88B's dedicated counterbalancing exists specifically to tame vibration that would otherwise transmit straight through the hard-mounted frame to the rider.

Styling stays deliberately restrained: a silver powdercoated engine, classic laced wheels, a black horseshoe oil tank, and a bobtail rear fender give the Standard a genuinely clean, unadorned look versus its more heavily accessorized Softail siblings. Underneath that simple surface sits the same hidden horizontal rear shock suspension every Softail uses to fake a rigid, hardtail-frame appearance while actually delivering real suspension travel. A custom seat and wide handlebar round out the factory-spec ergonomics — genuinely comfortable, straightforward touchpoints that leave plenty of room for a personal build. Dry weight comes in around 628-672 lbs depending on source and equipment, with 2002 pricing starting at $12,995.
