Softail Night Train FXSTB (2000): The Year the Night Train Got the Twin Cam 88 Counterbalanced Engine

The Night Train launched in 1998 as the first model in Harley's blacked-out Night Train Softail line. The big news for 2000 was under the tank: Motorcycle.com's launch test called the new Twin Cam counter-balanced engine "the big news here." It's the same twin-counterbalanced 88B motor used in the Deuce, and 2000 was the first year the Softail range ran a Twin Cam engine at all.

Power comes from the air-cooled, counter-balanced Twin Cam 88B, a 1,449cc V-twin with two valves per cylinder, a 3.75 x 4.0 inch bore and stroke, and an 8.9:1 compression ratio. It makes a claimed 63 hp at 5,300 rpm and 106 Nm (78.2 lb-ft) of torque at 3,200 rpm through a 5-speed transmission. The engine wears high-gloss, textured and wrinkle black finishes to match the jet-black paint.

The look is black-on-black: a minimalist seat, stainless drag bars on six-inch risers, and a wide raked fork over a 21-inch laced front wheel. The testers called it "a long, low, stable ride."

Confirmed figures list an 80/90-19 front tire and 130/90-16 rear, a single 292mm disc with a four-piston caliper at each end, a 25.1-inch seat height, and a 66.7-inch wheelbase. The fuel tank holds 18.9 litres, including a 1.9-litre reserve, and dry weight is about 305kg (672 lbs).
