Softail Standard FXST (Twin Cam 103B Years): Harley’s Stripped-Down Softail with the 103B Engine

The Softail Standard is Harley’s most basic Softail, the stripped-down entry bike of the family. It has the Softail’s hardtail look, with horizontally mounted shocks hidden under the frame, and it was sold in colours such as Vivid Black, Ember Red Sunglo and Brilliant Silver Pearl. Because it was cheap and simple, owners often customize it, with ape hangers, new exhausts, custom wheels and seats, so check what a customer’s bike has before ordering parts.

Power comes from the Twin Cam 103B, the counterbalanced 1,690cc (103 cubic inch) V-twin that became standard on Harley’s big twins for 2012. It has pushrod-operated overhead valves with two valves per cylinder, a 98.4mm bore, a 111.1mm stroke and a 9.6:1 compression ratio, and it is fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. The Twin Cam 103 has an automatic compression release and about 6 percent more peak torque than the Twin Cam 96 it replaced. The gearbox is a 6-speed Cruise Drive with belt final drive.

The Softail Standard shares its frame and powertrain with the rest of the Twin Cam Softail range, so most engine and drivetrain parts match across the models, but styling parts are model-specific. Check the VIN before ordering.
