Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard 2012 Service Manual

The Softail Standard is the original Softail formula: a raked-out front fork, a fat bobtail rear fender, and a hidden rear shock that gives the look of a rigid hardtail frame with real suspension underneath. 2012 was the year Harley moved almost the whole Softail range to the bigger 103ci engine, which is why this model carries the "103" suffix in its recall coding. The Blackline was the only Softail that stayed on the smaller Twin Cam 96.

Power comes from the air-cooled Twin Cam 103, a 1,690cc V-twin with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, delivering a claimed 98.7 lb-ft (134 Nm) of torque at 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with belt final drive. Harley put an automatic compression release on the 103 for easier starting.

The 2012 Softail range shared a rigid-mounted, counter-balanced Twin Cam 103B, a lower, narrower seat, and 1.25-inch internally wired handlebars on some models. A factory Security Package with the Smart Security System and ABS was an optional extra. Parts for the shared Twin Cam 103 powertrain and Softail chassis are widely available across the 2012 range, so sourcing components is straightforward even for this less common variant.

A 2012 recall covered Softail and Dyna models built between August 2011 and February 2012 for possible corrosion of the front brake master cylinder banjo bolt threads, a real sudden brake fluid loss risk. If you're servicing an early-build 2012 Softail, check that the remedy was carried out.
