Softail Standard FXST (2007): The Basic Softail with the New Twin Cam 96B
The Softail Standard is the stripped-down entry bike of Harley’s Softail range, with a classic hardtail look and no extras to get in the way. It listed at $14,995 plus $290 destination in 2007, against $15,895 for the Night Train and $16,895 for the Softail Custom. It has a 21-inch front wheel with a Dunlop MH90-21 tire, which gives it the long, lean look of a classic chopper-style bike. It’s a popular base for customizing, and owners often fit drag bars, new exhausts and other upgrades, so check what’s on a given bike before ordering parts.
2007 was the year the Softail family moved from the Twin Cam 88B to the new Twin Cam 96B. This is an air-cooled, rigid-mounted, counterbalanced 1,584cc V-twin with a 95.3mm bore, a 111.3mm stroke and a 9.2:1 compression ratio. It makes about 119 Nm (88 lb-ft) of torque at 2,750 rpm on this model, and it’s fed by Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, so there’s no choke to worry about. It has a lighter camshaft design and lighter pistons and connecting rods than the 88. Harley lists fuel economy of about 53 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg in the city. The gearbox is a 6-speed with belt final drive, replacing the old 5-speed.
The chassis uses the Softail design, with horizontal rear shocks hidden under the bike, and a telescopic fork. Because a few listings call the bike a 1584 carburetted model, check the VIN and the fuel system on your bike, as 2007 was the year fuel injection became standard across Harley’s big twins.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Softail Standard FXST running the way it was built to.
