Softail Standard FXST (1999): The Last Evolution-Powered Softail Before the Twin Cam

The 1999 FXST marks the end of the Evolution 1340 in the Softail chassis, before the Twin Cam 88B took over the following year. It is the plain Softail, with a rigid-inspired silhouette, hidden rear shocks and belt drive, the blank canvas for owners to customize. It stands apart from its fancier family members, the Softail Custom, Springer Softail, Fat Boy, Heritage Softail Classic and Heritage Springer.

Power comes from the air-cooled 1,340cc (80 cu in) Evolution V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves, hydraulic self-adjusting lifters and two valves per cylinder. It has a bore and stroke of about 3.5 x 4.25 inches (89 x 108mm) and is fed by a 40mm constant-velocity carburetor. The gearbox is a 5-speed with belt final drive. The Evolution engine in the Softail line features silver-painted heads, cylinders, cam cover, transmission and primary covers.

The frame is the Softail design, with the hidden shocks that give the look of a hardtail. Braking is a single disc at each wheel, and the tank holds about 5 gallons.

Because the 1999 FXST is the last year of the Evolution in the Softail chassis, its engine parts won't interchange with the Twin Cam 88B bikes that followed, and its electrical and fuel components differ as well. Check the VIN and engine before ordering parts.
